The Essentials Reader is a collection of 30 phonics-controlled texts based on the concepts students are learning in Essentials. The optional Reader activities are listed under level A in Essentials, since this level is most often the best fit for struggling readers; however, the Essentials Reader is a great reading comprehension supplement to a student's first time through Essentials at either level A or B.
The Essentials Reader allows students to apply the phonograms and spelling rules they are learning with real texts of various genres and topics. Because it is carefully controlled to use only phonics and spelling concepts students have learned, struggling readers are able to read the texts successfully, building confidence, comprehension skills, and fluency as they read engaging age-appropriate content. The Reader is designed with the needs of older struggling readers in mind, but it may also be used as the core of a reading comprehension program for 3rd or 4th grade students reading at or near grade level.
