Can Logic of English be used for English Learners?
Logic of English® is an excellent resource for English Learners! Many of our products are beneficial in assisting English Learners (EL) develop strong reading and spelling skills for written English because of the emphasis on sound-symbol relationships and the morphological structure of English.
How does Logic of English fit into EL instruction?
Logic of English is not a beginning conversational English course. Beginning EL students, who do not have conversational English skills, should start with a program that focuses on speaking, listening, and vocabulary development.
English is an alphabetic language, and the relationship between spoken and written language must be taught. Logic of English curriculum emphasizes all of the basic sounds of English, but a foundation in spoken English is necessary before beginning.
Once basic conversational English skills have developed, Logic of English curriculum is an excellent way to study written English through reading and spelling instruction.
Logic of English and English Learners
English Learners often struggle to make sense of written English because spoken English is comprised of 44 sounds written in 75 basic ways. Unlike many other languages, English is not a transparent code where one letter corresponds to only one sound. Instead, English is an opaque code. However, 98% of English words are decodable if English phonograms and spelling rules are taught logically and systematically.
For example, students learn that:
- The phonogram C says two sounds /k/ and /s/.
- The phonogram C says the sound /s/ only before an E, I, or Y.
- This rule clarifies the difference between words such as cap, arc, and cent, citizen.
- This also explains why the two C's in circle say two different sounds.
One of the most challenging aspects of English is vocabulary development. The English language has a massive vocabulary that continues to grow today! Most well-educated adults use about 100,000 words. Therefore, it is necessary to use morphology to teach word parts, including prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Studying English morphology is an excellent way to help English Learners with reading, spelling, and vocabulary development. Logic of English curriculum provides the tools necessary to study English words!
Though English is a complex code, understanding how English works will help English Learners grow in their knowledge of how written English works for reading and spelling.
