What is the Lazy Vowel Chart?

The Lazy Vowel Chart is used to sort and keep track of words that use Spelling Rule 31. It is an ongoing activity and learning tool to collect words with a schwa sound. There is not a master list of words to include on the Lazy Vowel Chart, and each person's chart may look different. You will find instructions for using the Lazy Vowel Chart in:

• Foundations C Lesson 86

The purpose of the Lazy Vowel Chart is not about having a "complete" chart of certain words but helping students notice lazy sounds in words they are learning. This means it is okay to begin a Lazy Vowel Chart wherever you are in Foundations Lessons.

How to Create a Lazy Vowel Chart

1. Use a large piece of paper, open file folder, or poster board to create a simple chart. 
2. Write "Lazy Vowels" at the top of the chart. 
3. Divide the chart into two columns
4. For Lesson 45, label the first column "Schwa - ə." 
5. Add words to the first column that use the lazy vowel sound.
6. For Lesson 86, label the second column  "O - Before V, TH, M, N; or after W."
7. Add words to the second column when O says its lazy sound next to W, M, N, TH, or V.
