We continue to study the English spelling patterns and update the new understandings to our curriculum and reference materials. Though there have been a few changes, older editions of spelling rules are compatible with current curricula.

• Spelling Rule 7 was expanded, clarified, and split into two parts:
  • 7.1 - Y says /ē/ only in an unstressed syllable at the end of a multi-syllable word.
  • 7.2 - I may say /ē/ with a silent final E, at the end of a syllable, and at the end of foreign words.
• Spelling Rule 6 wording clarification: "When a one-syllable word ends in a single-vowel Y, it always says /ī/."
• The 4th Edition may be used with any Logic of English curriculum. If you are using older editions of Foundations or Essentials, we recommend teaching the new wording of Spelling Rule 7 included in these newer cards.

  • 31.1 Any vowel may say one of the schwa sounds, /ŭ/ or /ĭ/, in an unstressed syllable or unstressed word.
  • 31.2 O may say /ŭ/ in a stressed syllable next to W, TH, M, N, or V.
  • 31.3 AR and OR may say their schwa sound, /er/, in an unstressed syllable.
• Other spelling rules had minor wording clarifications.
  
  • Rule 2 - "G may soften to /j/ only when... 
  • Rule 4 - vowel "name" changed to "long sound"
  • Rule 14 - "accented" changed to "stressed"
