About Foundations
Logic of English® Foundations is a complete language arts program for students ages 4 to 7 (Some eight-year-olds will enjoy Foundations as well.) Our Foundations curriculum includes phonics, reading, spelling, handwriting, vocabulary, composition, and grammar.
This article covers the following topics:
- Foundations Levels and Where to Start
- Foundations and Handwriting
- Printed Materials and Online Courses
- Foundations Samples
Foundations students will learn to decode words without relying on pictures, guessing strategies, or memorizing sight words. Students develop phonemic awareness, learn to read and write the 75 basic phonograms, and build reading fluency through systematic, structured lessons filled with playful, joy-filled activities. Spelling analysis is used in Foundations to develop a strong understanding of written English works. You can learn more about Foundations by taking the Foundations Tour.
Foundations Levels and Where to Start
Our Foundations program is offered in four sequential levels: Foundations A, B, C, and D.
There are only two possible entry points for our Foundations program, Foundations A or Foundations B. Most students begin with Foundations A. However, sometimes it is appropriate to start with Foundations B. The Starting at Foundations B Assessment results are a good indicator if you should start with Foundations A or Foundations B.
Foundations C and D are not starting points for the curriculum. Learn more by reviewing our article, Can I Start Foundations at Level C or D?

Foundations and Handwriting
Our innovative Rhythm of Handwriting method is built into our Foundations curriculum, aiding students in developing fluid handwriting.
During Foundations A and B, students learn to write their lowercase and uppercase letters, either in manuscript or cursive. In Foundations C and D, students practice and strengthen their handwriting skills through copywork and dictation in the handwriting style taught in Foundations A and B.
