Basic Phonogram Flash Cards
The Basic Phonogram Flash Cards include 75 single-letter and multi-letter phonograms with the phonogram printed on one side and corresponding sounds and sample words on the opposite side. The cards are printed on heavy stock with a coated finish. Because the flash cards are durable and made to last, lamination is unnecessary. The Basic Phonogram Flash Cards will be used frequently for instruction and playing many of the games that make learning the logic of English fun and exciting!
The Basic Phonogram Flash Cards are recommended for Foundations, Essentials, and Sounding Out the Sight Words and are included in many of our complete sets. They can also be purchased separately to be used to supplement other reading and spelling programs.
Where are the Pictures?
The Basic Phonogram Flash Cards were purposefully created without pictures with a standard black font because
- Many phonograms in English make more than one sound. A visual image gives the impression that the phonogram makes only one sound.
- Images create an indirect memory link between the phonogram and the sound. Instead, it is important to focus on making a connection between the sounds and the letter symbol.
- Visually simple cards prevent distraction, allowing students to focus on drawing a clear connection between the sounds represented by the phonogram.
Though the Basic Phonogram Flash Cards appear to be a set of simple flash cards, they are filled with tools to help students learn to read and spell by providing practice and review through games and active learning.
