Tips for Organizing Core Materials
Organizing Flash Cards, Game Cards, and Phonogram Game Tiles
Many families have found it beneficial to organize their Logic of English® core materials. This ensures the materials are accessible and lessons are fun and engaging. Quick access to game tiles, flash cards, game cards, etc., makes learning and teaching more successful.
Logic of English does not recommend laminating your materials. Lamination is unnecessary because flash cards, quick references, and game tiles are all printed on heavy stock and coated for durability.
Flash Cards
We suggest creating three main categories labeled with dividers, sticky tabs, or post-it notes:
- Not Introduced or Future Use
- Learning or In Use
- Mastered (only applies to phonograms flash cards)
Tips for Sorting
- Before teaching a lesson, gather the phonogram cards, game cards, and any flash cards needed and move them from Not Introduced to Learning.
-
Confirm which phonograms your student has mastered and include them in games and drill practice each week.
Phonogram Game Cards
We suggest sorting the Phonogram Game Cards in the similar categories previously noted and adding a section for action cards.
- Not Introduced or Future Use
- Learning or In Use
-
Action Cards - such as Reverse, Wild, Rotten Egg, Skip, etc.
Phonogram Game Tiles
We suggest organizing the Phonogram Game Tiles in the three categories listed above. In addition, the following categories are recommended for sorting:
The tiles are color-coded by type:
- Blue - Consonants
- Red - Vowels
- Green - Silent Final E
- Purple - R-controlled vowels
It is helpful to pull the Phonogram Game Tiles you will be using for lessons ahead of time. You can have your student help you sort them at the end of lessons to help keep them organized.
Tips for Storing and Organizing
- Rubber bands
-
- Easy option to use that requires minimal space.
-
- Plastic bags
-
- This option takes up a small amount of space and allows each bag to be labeled.
-
- Index Card Packets or Boxes
-
- These allow you to separate each type of card with its own set.
-
- Clear Plastic Storage Boxes
-
- Storage boxes in the craft section of your local craft store are a great way to separate the tiles.
- Boxes with ample space allow you to use dividers, sticky tabs, or post-it notes to identify the categories.
- Jewelry or bead boxes provide lots of space for separating the tiles.
-
- Magnets
-
- Many customers have turned their Phonogram Game Tiles into magnets.
- Either re-using magnets or purchasing magnetic tape can be cut to the tile size and secured with an adhesive backing.
- Store the magnetic tiles on either a magnetic whiteboard or cookie sheet.
-
- Labels
-
- Those with multiple sets of the same flash cards might consider drawing a line on the bottom of the flash card deck with a colored marker, using a different color for each student's set.
